Several Residents Ask Nadine Bello to Resign Council Seat

Claim she knew of husband's criminal record when he was appointed to environmental commission.

A group of residents again called on 6th Ward Councilwoman Nadine Bello to resign her seat at Wednesday night's council meeting.

Bello, who is running for reelection this year, has been mired in controversy for several weeks since her husband, Jerry Bello,  as chairman of the Wayne Environmental Commission Sept. 8.

Jerry Bello resigned in the wake of a lawsuit that claimed he should not have been allowed to serve on the commission due to a criminal conviction in 1994. He was convicted of official misconduct for taking bribes while he was chairman of the Paterson Improvement Authority and was sentenced to four years probation and served 300 days in jail.

The suit was filed against the township by resident Bill Brennan, a candidate for Assembly, who cited a state law that prohibits individuals convicted of a crime from serving in government.

Brennan has led the charge in demanding that Nadine Bello also resign, claiming she knew of Bello’s conviction when he was appointed to the commission and failed to inform township officials.

"I think she should resign," said Suzanne Pudup, an at-large candidate in this year's election.

Other residents said they want Bello to be honest about whether she knew about her husband's criminal record before he joined the commission. Bello has not commented publicly on the calls for her resignation and has continued with her reelection campaign. She gave an impassioned speech in support of her husband at a council meeting earlier in the month.

"You're going to have to come clean," resident Michael Fautau said to the councilwoman. "Did you back his appointment to the commission? Come clean tonight. Speak up."

At Wednesday's meeting, several people on one side of the room applauded each time someone spoke in support of Bello resigning. Council President Joseph Schweighardt banged his gavel several times and had to silence the crowd.

But some people who spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting supported the councilwoman.

“She’s done a phenomenal job representing [us],” said 6th Ward resident Rex Miatke.

Brennan unsuccessfully ran for council three times on the Democratic ticket. He is running against Republican incumbent Assemblyman Scott Rumana in the 40th Legislative District race this year.

Nadine Bello....why don't you tell us why you didn't show up to the debate last night! Why not post on this forum and tell why. Don't you think you owe it to the taxpayers in Ward 6, as well as all the taxpayers here in Wayne. After all, what you vote on affects us all.
leanbean October 21, 2011 at 06:58 PM
VOTERS OF THE SIXTH WARD: Your fools if you elect Bello again. She has had ample time and chances to explain herself. Other than saying she loves her husband. She hasn't said boo. Plus the fact that she passed on the debate. So that she would not be put in a corner. And have to answer questions about him being appointed. While she sat on the council and voted for his appointment. If you vote for her? You'll never be able to be leave anything she'll tell you or will say.

Nadine Bello. if you have nothing to hide, come out from hiding! Tell us, did you sign your ethics pledge as yet?
Al Scala October 21, 2011 at 07:22 PM
Nadine...there is no right way to do a wrong thing!
Rob Burke October 21, 2011 at 09:00 PM
But he knows now. Shouldn't he at least apologize that this happened on his watch and pledge to redouble his efforts to ensure that no more extortionists will end up in positions in the government?

The "actions" that have taken place by the council members since being exposed to the extortionist "leak" of Jerry Bello by Bill Brennen is a classic case of the "spit ball " being hurled at the back of the teacher in high-school. What is clear is that someone threw it. It's also clear that someone most likely saw the person throw it. So the teacher turns around and asks: "Who threw the spit ball" ? The same question is asked several times, and if no one fesses up to throwing it or seeing who through it- the entire class is punished. It's a simple way of protecting the guilty, and not losing face by exposing the person who launched it. The spit ball is Jerry Bello. He landed in the seat on the council because someone knew he was a felon and failed to fess up. Some members didn't know what happened, but "someone" did. Since nobody is admitting they knew anything about the "spit ball" they should all be held equally responsible and none of them should be re-elected. As citizens, our primary goal should be to elect those "most qualified" to represent our communities, and to not waste our time on those that snicker to our faces knowing that the people behind us are taking aim. We're fools if we torerate this nonsence, and bigger fools if we re-elect them. Throw a spit ball at your boss and see what happens !

The bottom line here is that our Town Council is not being honest to the Taxpayers. Everyone either said they were not aware that Jerry Bello was a convicted criminal, or they said nothing. nothing at all. What are the odds that all of them didn't know? RIGHT. Some of them, if not all knew. Think about it! These guys know everything that's happening in town. And they deny this! I'm a registered republican and I wouldn't vote for these guys, no way, no how! Politicians are like dirty diapers. They need to be changed for a very good reason!

Nadine, have you signed your ethics pledge as yet?
Al Scala October 22, 2011 at 11:57 AM
Nadine Bello was a NO SHOW at the debate. If you HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE, WHY ARE YOU HIDING? Don't you think you owe your constituents more than that? Don't you think you owe the taxpayers of Wayne more than that? When you vote on something, it affects us all. By the way, did you sign your ethics pledge as yet, as required by law?
Al Scala October 22, 2011 at 12:07 PM
Dear Editor. Have a set of you know what. Stop erasing these posts. You should be non partisan here! What is this a gag order? You keep erasing, I'll continue to post the same thing. The more I post, the more I think of!
Al Scala October 22, 2011 at 12:09 PM
Our elected officials, and our appointed ones, Jimenez, Bello, Lonnie Miller Ryan are all like dirty diapers. THEY NEED TO BE CHANGED.

People in general feel that we need LESS government, like SCURALLI....TALK LESS!
Rob Burke October 22, 2011 at 12:33 PM
Scuralli didn't even support Wayne with his business. It was called WAYNE tool and dye but it was in TOTOWA. THEY NEVER PAID TAXES TO WAYNE. SCURALLI GAVE THE RATABLE TO TOTOWA!!!
Rob Burke October 22, 2011 at 12:37 PM
Q: What do you call a debate where a candidate doesn't show up? A: A joke. No officials will confront the ethical dilemma of convicted extortionist Jerry Bello illegally holding public positions in the Wayne government for 7 years, and his wife Nadine's refusal to resign -- or even answer questions with impartial moderators. NO JUSTICE TIL THERE'S NO CRIMINALS IN GOVERNMENT
Rex miatke October 22, 2011 at 01:49 PM
Hey Rob I am just curious if maybe the reason Councilwoman Bello can't resapond to anything might be due to the law suit that Billie Sue filed aginst her. Did Billie Sue possibly hold off on filling the suit so she wouldn't be able to make any remarks in reference to this situation due to ongoing letigation. Is it not true that sometimes when a law suit is filed people have a gag order put on so nothing can be said in reference to the law suit. Just curious.

As I said earlier in the thread, we have not deleted a single comment from this thread. Users have. See that little "flag as inappropriate" button? Enough flags and the comments get pulled into a moderation queue for us to review, which is not an easy or quick job. Sometimes we don't get to it as fast as we would like. We have no agenda and take no sides in any political debate.
Justice October 22, 2011 at 02:40 PM
Bello, it is time for you to go. Do it right and resign or be voted out. Vote them all out, especially the ones that were appointed. Vote Rumano out
Rob Burke October 22, 2011 at 02:42 PM
Tom: Is it possible to disable auto delete and ONLY delete after human review? It seems that auto deletion is suppressing democracy in action and human review doesn't appear to result in comment reinstatement -- at least not in a time frame that keeps the comments relevant.
Al Scala October 22, 2011 at 04:17 PM
Nadine Bello...why are you running and hiding from the truth! YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!
Ridiculous October 22, 2011 at 04:59 PM
Tom, you should disable the auto delete flag, the Republicans on the council have a huge credibility issue and they know it. They monitor these posts and delet anything that they deem contrary to their cause, especially The Bello Corruption.
Tom Troncone (Editor) October 22, 2011 at 10:04 PM
I do not have that option at this point.
Bill Brennan October 22, 2011 at 10:09 PM
Well you should work on it, these criminal supporting censors are manipulating your comment section. At the very least those of us who sign our names ought be bullet proofed from deletion. You have zero liability for my comments.
stewart resmer October 23, 2011 at 12:09 AM
agreed...they cant handle the truth, they have threatened city staff if ever they speak out, they have shunted public television, and now this, they are in a panic that there is more to be told. they are stalling for time till election day, as though these issues will just go away. but just wait till the insurance actuaries count the beans for the losses time and again and see how the townships rating fairs, as insurers and rating agencies respond the Inspector General will want an accounting of past FEMA monies were dispursed.
Justice October 26, 2011 at 07:57 AM
Nadine, why would you stay somewhere when no one wants you. It is just not normal. Do you have such low self-esteem that you are subjecting yourself and your children to such ridicule? Think of your children not yourself Resign and be gone.
Justice October 26, 2011 at 08:02 AM
the city staff should organize and suit for hostile working conditions, retaliation, etc. No cost to taxpayers. Insurance would defend the town, unless the broker is a buddy who screwed up the policies, in which case he/she should be sued for malpractice/ errors and omissions. Lawsuits are the only thing that corrupt individuals pay attention to. The residents of this town should suit the council for malfeasance. This town is full of lawyers, anyone have guts enough to do it? It would certainly give the attorney Johnny Cochran status.
Justice October 26, 2011 at 08:08 AM
Nadine, take Scott with you and don't let the door hit you on the way out.
Justice October 26, 2011 at 08:11 AM
Scott and Nadine, Nadine and Scott OUT
Rex miatke October 26, 2011 at 10:39 AM
I would rather see the Billie Sue bob show go myself but Nov 8th the voters will make their decision. Do they want to re elect the incumbents or do they agree with Billie Sue Bob show and want to make the change that Billie Sue Bob is asking for. This all up to the voters on Nov 8th. I feel that the voters will speak loud and clear that they will want no part of the Billie Sue Bob show.
Justice October 26, 2011 at 11:41 AM
well that is to bad for the rest of us that want integrity and transparency
Justice October 26, 2011 at 11:42 AM
I want to see financials. Where are the financials? These people chose public office, that also means public scrutiny...Where is the money?
