Noise Complaints Spark Change in ATV Ordinance

Council adopts measures to limit noise impact and nuisance from use of off-road vehicles in the township.

The Wayne Township Council is hoping to curb noise associated with off-road vehicles after adopting an ordinance that would put restrictions on the vehicles.

Under the new town law, it is prohibited to use an off-road vehicle, or ATV, between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. They can also not be used on private property without permission or in a way that creates loud or "unusual" noise that disturbs the peace. Penalties for such would be determined by the police, but could include a fine, imprisonment or community service..

The council voted to adopt the new law at its July 3 meeting after hearing complaints from residents about noise from ATVs being used near their properties, according to Wayne Today. Officials had already been working to curb noise pollution as a whole in the township.

The local ordinance was sponsored by Council President Joseph Scuralli and Councilman Chris McIntyre.
