Mayor: Please Donate Food and Gift Cards to Flood Victims

Mayor Vergano: 'Now is the time for all of us to stand together and help our neighbors in need.'

Mayor Christopher Vergano wrote the following letter to Wayne residents following this week's flood event:

Dear Residents:

This past week we have witnessed the effects of Hurricane Irene which has given us major flooding and has impacted many of our fellow Township residents. We have not seen destruction and levels of water like this since 1984. Many of our fellow residents were affected in a devastating manor and now need our help. Many have lost their homes, their personal belongings and will not be able to return to their neighborhoods for some time. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who were impacted.

I am now asking you to join with me and assist our fellow residents, our neighbors who were affected by this devastating hurricane. Now more than ever your assistance is needed to help our fellow Wayne family. There are two ways to help:

  • Donations of non-perishable food items are desperately needed for our community members. Food donations can be brought to either the Mayor’s office at Town Hall at 475 Valley Road or the Packanack Community Church located at 120 Lake Drive East in Packanack Lake. Donated food items will be distributed by the Wayne Interfaith Network Food Bank. The Interfaith network is a well established faith-based organization that has run a food bank in Wayne for many years and its members represent all of our township religious institutions.
  • The second way to help is to purchase and donate gift cards to local supermarkets for food and other necessary supplies. We suggest $25 and $50 increments. The gift cards will be distributed by the Township’s Department of Social and Senior Services based on need and should be mailed to:

Now is the time for all of us to stand together and help our neighbors in need. We always talk about how great a place Wayne is to live and raise a family. Now is the time to prove it. Let us all join together and help those members of the “Wayne Family” that are now in need.

Please join with me in this very worthwhile effort.
