Valley Graduate Shot, Killed in Paterson

Issac Rinas, 18, was found on Fair Street with a gunshot wound to his neck, police said.

A Wayne Valley High School graduate was shot and killed in Paterson shortly after the commencement ceremony Wednesday.

Issac Rinas, 18, was found on Fair Street with a gunshot wound to his neck Wednesday, Paterson police Capt. Heriberto Rodriguez said.

Headquarters received multiple calls of gunshot fire at East 18th and Fair streets at 8:48 p.m. Wednesday, Rodriguez said.

Rinas was with a friend in a car on Fair Street when, according to the friend, Rinas pulled over at 366 Fair St., police said.

A man entered the back seat of the vehicle and showed a handgun, Rodriguez said. The man demanded Rinas' friend’s money and ordered him to exit the vehicle, which he did, Rodriguez said.

The man shot Rinas in the neck once he and Rinas exited the vehicle.

Police did not release any further details.

Assistant Superintendent Marysol Berrios said that a crisis team and administrators are "on alert to support our students, as needed." She did not comment further.

Chief Assistant Passaic County Prosecutor Mike DeMarco could not be reached for comment.
