Health Department Employee Accused of Distributing Prescription Meds

Katie Mele, 25, was charged as a result of a joint investigation between Wayne police and the county prosecutor's office.

A Wayne Health Department employee was charged with distributing prescription medication last month, authorities confirmed.

Katie Mele, 25, was arrested Sept. 18, Wayne Detective Sgt. James Celentano said.

Celentano is in charge of the department’s special operations narcotics unit.

“It’s still a pending investigation,” Celetano said.

Mele is scheduled to appear in Superior Court on the charge but Celetano could not provide an exact date. Celetano confirmed Mele was released and issued a summons. No bail was set.

NorthJersey.com reported that Mele no longer works for the Health Department. She describes herself on her LinkedIn profile as a registered environmental health specialist and is a graduate of Wayne Valley High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from William Paterson University.
