Update: Police Report: Football Player Blows Air Horn Into Teacher's Eye

Interim Superintendent said that playing football is a "privilege."

Wayne School District officials are looking into an alleged incident involving a beleaguered Wayne Hills High School football player blowing an air horn into a teacher’s face Friday afternoon and injuring her eye at a pep rally.

Star player and team captain Andrew Monaghan, 18, who was among nine football players  earlier this month after they allegedly attacked two  students after a party, was involved in the incident, according to a  report.

According to the report, teacher Marina Cangialosi was on duty in the stands during the Friday rally and noticed that student Joe Lane, also a football player, had something in his hand hidden behind his back. Cangialosi asked Lane, 18, for the item, but he resisted giving it to her.

The report states that Lane tried passing it to Monaghan, who was next to him, but Monaghan also refused to give the item to Cangialosi. Cangialosi asked for the item again.

Lane is quoted in the report as saying, “Mrs. Cangialosi, look, it is only an air horn.”

Lane then pointed the air horn toward Cangialosi and activated it, according to the report.

Cangialosi stated to police that the horn was so close to her face that she felt the effect of it in her right eye. She also stated that her vision in that eye became blurry.

The report also states that Cangialosi believes that the air horn was not activated with the intent of hurting her, only to show her that it was an air horn. Cangialosi confiscated the air horn, and then drove herself to Chilton Hospital in Pequannock, police said.

Roth stated that it is a “privilege” to play high school football. He also said, “participating in high school sports can provide valuable learning experiences for children.”

The Wayne Hills High School handbook states that insubordination is “the act of deliberately disobeying authority. Students are expected to comply with the instructions of administrators, teachers, and staff at all times throughout the school day.”

The district’s code of conduct states that high school students can receive up to a three-day long out of school suspension for a first-time offense of insubordination.

Wayne Police Chief John Reardon said that Lane and Monaghan have not been charged in the incident. Cangialosi would have to make a formal statement to police in order for that to occur, he said.

Interim Superintendent Michael Roth said Monday afternoon, that “the district is taking appropriate steps to address the incident.”

Sean Spiller, president of the Wayne Education Association, said he was aware of the incident Monday, adding that he believes district administrators are “acting appropriately to address the situation.”

Wayne Hills Principal Scot Beckerman declined comment.

Nine Hills football players, including Monaghan, were Nov. 8 after they, according to police, attacked two students after a party on Urban Club Road Oct. 29.

The players were allowed to play in the team’s first- and second-round state playoff games at Wayne Hills earlier this month. Roth from participating in the second-round game Nov. 16, but district officials placed a . The board is expected to issue a final ruling on the matter Nov. 29.

where do you get assault from they said it was an accident that the airhorn went off.
Sean Gilday November 23, 2011 at 09:07 PM
It may have been an accident and maybe it's not assault but do you get that the teacher asked them both to hand it over and they refused and then this kid put it up to the teachers face? By the way have you ever used an air horn? They don't just go off, you need to put a good amount of pressure on the handle or button. The airborne incident by itself maybe is not that huge but it speaks to a pattern of behavior....

Media does not give the news now it also makes the news. (Mrs Olsen, coach Olsen and the principal did not give the air horn to the kids or do I have to write a long letter for you dummies who just dont get it) If you dont think about the news that way then you probably still think Obama is a great president!

John M what are you referencing?

Actually? I think that Obama-Biden are great! Obama has overhauled the food safety system Advanced women's rights in the work place Ended Don't Ask, Don't Tell (DADT) in our military Stopped defending DOMA in court. Passed the Hate Crimes bill. Appointed two pro-choice women to the Supreme Court. Expanded access to medical care and provided subsidies for people who can't afford it. Expanded the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) Fixed the preexisting conditions travesty [and rescissions] in health insurance. Invested in clean energy. Overhauled the credit card industry, making it much more consumer-friendly. While Dodd-Frank bill was weak in many respects, it was still an extremely worthwhile start at re-regulating the financial sector. He created a Elizabeth Warren's dream agency: The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. He's done a lot for veterans He got help for people whose health was injured during the clean-up after the 9/11 attacks. None of these things were priorities for Republicans. They actively opposed, directly or indirectly through obstruction, every single item on this list. In today's paper, the teacher had to ask Danny Lane three times for the air horn. Not once, not twice but three times. The third time, he pulls the airhorn from behind kis back and blows it in the teachers face. Firstly, isn't this insubordination? Secondly, is this kid a moron? So, as I post this Danny Lane is at the Wayne Hills Beefsteak at the highschool. I would love to be a fly on the wall to hear the talk of the evening. Oh, by the way, the menu is beefsteak, koolaid and broccoliroids.

Phil, that's a good question, considering that St. Joe's ophthalmologists can beat up Chilton's ophthalmologists.
Phil November 24, 2011 at 09:17 AM
Chilton v St Joe's (NOT WAYNE GENERAL IN QUITE A FEW YEARS). I agree St. Joe's Doctors can beat up Chilton doctors anytime anyhow. Chilton is about the money honey St Joe's is about the care dear
Wayne EyeDoc November 24, 2011 at 02:05 PM
Hey, I hope the Chilton doctors don't come to the St. Joe's holiday party and cause trouble. They should know how intense the rivalry can get between these cross- town foes. There won't be a BOE to protect them from a beat down in the streets.

Judge just refused 12 year olds (?) home after throwing shopping carts unto person....yet, the town of Wayne allows these THUGS to roam free and victimizes the victim...Insanity

Now a football player blew an air horn into a teachers face after she told him to stop blowing it. He blew it in her face and she suffered an eye injury. This will of course lead to another lawsuit or the teacher being out on disability for her injury. This is what happens when we have a spineless BOE, Interim Superintendant and a gutless Mayor & Council who haven't said a word about all of this. Meanwhile our town is in the papers everyday and on the news. No one can understand how a Coach bullied the BOE and intimidated them to reverse the interims decision. Wayne Hills, the Coach and the students are getting all the bad publicity they deserve. If these players were benched none of this would be an issue at this point. Its disgusting how they have allowed a few individuals destroy a high schools reputation and that of the Township also. Where are you Mayor Vergano? You can come out from hiding and face the facts that the BOE and its former members who are now on the Townships governing body are destroying this town. Elections will come soon and you will all be voted out if the taxpayers have any common sense.
Phil November 24, 2011 at 04:27 PM
There go the property values Into the sewer where they belong God Bless Vergano and Rumana, the Heroes of this Insanity Seriously, I wish the families of the Victims a Happy Thanksgiving in spite of everything We have your back
Rex miatke November 24, 2011 at 04:32 PM
No Chilton is about the care and Saint Joes is about the money. I see Chilton Doctors beating Saint Joes doctors in a fight. My money is on Chilton. Go Chilton Beat Saint Joes.

The individuals involved with this unfortunate he fight really know the truth. And rumors fly around town by people who assume or come to their own conclusion they are already persecuting the people involved and their families. The truth will come forward. The people of Wayne Township are divided Wayne "Hills side" and the "Valley side" of town this is not only absurd it's twisted. Do we not all live in the same township? The Wayne Police Dept. and Mayor are doing everything to get to the bottom of this misfortunate mishap. Tensions are high people demanding for results and yelling for justice..it isn't making it easier for the police to do what's right. I can certainly understand the frustration of this dilemma. Accountability will prevail on those individuals that are guilty we must let the judiciary system work. Innocent until proven guilty it's the way it works. One may voice an opinion, however, without proclaiming an already guilty verdict. It's not the way it works. The parents on both sides they must be distraught. I know I would be.They have a right to protect their families. As for the News Papers I must say that they are looking at the Wayne School system with a magnify glass. They're just looking for a good juicy story so they can sell their papers and they don't care who they walk on to get headline news. There are perhaps only of few decent reporters that want the truth to the story.
