Police Officers Raise $2,000 for Special Olympics

Team played in honor of former officer Joseph Alvino, who died in 1994.

Wayne police officers played in the Snow Bowl at Giants Stadium recently. The charity football game raises money for Special Olympics New Jersey.

The officers’ team name was WPD 151. The number was the badge number of Joseph Alvino, a former police officer who died in 1994. The team plays in the annual game in Alvino’s honor.

Alvino was instrumental in projects and events for the Special Olympics, including the New Jersey Law Enforcement Torch Run, the barrier-free playground installed at Ryerson School in Wayne, named in his honor, and other events involving handicapped children.
