Police Department Receives $10,000 for Bulletproof Vests

Grant comes from the state's Body Armor Replacement Fund.

The Wayne Police Department will receive a $10,400 grant to purchase new bulletproof vests.

The grant is funded by the the state’s Body Armor Replacement Fund from the Division of Criminal Justice (DCJ). Nearly $3.6 million was given to more than 540 agencies that applied for funds.

Chief John Reardon said that vests typically cost between $600 and $800 each and last for about three to five years. He said he wasn’t sure exactly how many vests the department would purchase, but did say that that new police officers will receive new vests.

State Attorney General Paula Dow and DCJ Director Stephen Taylor announced the awarding of the grants Tuesday afternoon.

Capital for the fund comes from a $1 surcharge on traffic tickets and bail forfeitures.
