Fire commissioner was told no one was living in the house.

Police are investigating a possible arson after a fire broke out in a Wayne Street home early Friday morning.

Fire commissioner Barry Turner said authorities received the call at 1:40 a.m. Friday.

Turner said police told him that no one was living in the one-story house; the homeowner arrived at the scene at about 2:10 a.m.

Turner said the arson unit was at the scene investigating the incident. Turner said the fire department asked for the unit to go the scene.

Smoke steadily made its way out of the house even after the fire was knocked out. Firefighters cut holes in the roof to vent smoke. Others blasted water into the house through holes where windows used to be.
