Passenger Extricated After Car Slams Into Tree

Single-vehicle accident occurred Saturday night on Newark-Pompton Turnpike.

A passenger needed to be extricated from a vehicle that struck a tree Saturday night on Newark-Pompton Turnpike, Wayne Police said.

A Ford Mustang slammed into a tree on Newark Pompton Turnpike near Packanack Lake Road at about 7:30 p.m.

A passenger's leg was trapped beneath the dashboard, before being freed by the Wayne Township Memorial First Aid Squad, police said. The victim, whose identity was not released, was transported to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson, police said.

The driver of the vehicle was not injured and did not receive a summons, police said.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
