Man Remains In ICU After Weekend Motorcycle Crash

Wayne resident has been charged with driving while intoxicated, police say.

A Wayne man cops say was drunk when he was flung 40 feet off his motorcycle in Mahwah early Sunday morning remained in intensive care Monday, Police Chief Jim Batelli said.

Sidney Kirby Jr., 50, was transported to the Hackensack University Medical Center via Medevac after 12:39 a.m. Sunday, when his motorcycle crashed into a guardrail on the bend of Sparrowbush Road at Carlough Road in Mahwah, Batelli said.

An investigation determined that Kirby lost control of his 2011 Harley Davidson as he approached the curve. He then hit the rail and was thrown 40 feet from his bike onto a nearby residential lawn, police said.

According to Batelli, Kirby was charged with driving while intoxicated and reckless driving after an investigation of the crash.

When Mahwah Police Officer Keith Iorio arrived, Kirby was conscious but had “extensive lower extremity injuries and a head injury,” Batelli said. The Medevac was called due to the severity of the injuries, he said.

Immediate emergency care was provided by Mahwah Ambulance Corps. and Valley Hospital ALS and BLS squads, police said.

The biker’s current condition was not known Monday afternoon, Batelli said.

At this point the man has only been charged which means he has been ACCUSED of doing something wrong. He has not been found guilty or plead guilty. The DWI charges are based upon limited available information, like the odor of alcohol, since he was obviously not in any condition to do field sobriety tests or submit to breath testing. By all accounts (so far) this guy seems to be a very decent person who MAY have made a tragic decision or series of decisions. Let's hope the man recovers and if necessary the legal system will run its course.
