Malfunctioning Sump Pump Forces Group Home Evacuation

Lots of smoke, but no flames, fire officials report.

A malfunctioning sump pump filled a basement with smoke and forced the evacuation of a group home on Kime Avenue Friday afternoon.

While the pump gave off dense smoke, there were no flames, and all of the residents—including some in wheelchairs—were out of the house by the time firefighters arrived, according to Chief Mike Frerich of Wayne Fire Company #3.

Wayne fire companies #5, #2 and #1 also responded to the call. Residents returned to the home about an hour after firefighters received the initial alarm.
