Fire Destroys SUV, Occupants Unharmed

Vehicle was 'completely engulfed' in flames.

The driver and passenger were unharmed after the sport utility vehicle they were in caught on fire Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Weinmanns Boulevard and Preakness Avenue. Police blocked off part of Preakness Boulevard. 

The driver, Luigi Giacon, was on Weinmanns Boulevard when the 2002 Jeep Liberty he was driving caught on fire.

"I started to smell burning rubber. Then I noticed that flames start to out from underneath the dashboard of the passenger's side," Giacon said. "I stopped the car and took a jug of water and started to douse the flame and that's when it started getting bigger."

Giacon said the vehicle was "fully engulfed" in flames by the time police and fire personnel arrived.

Craig Bedoe, assistant chief of Fire Company 4, said the cause of the fire was unknown Wednesday morning. He said the Fire Inspection Bureau would investigate the incident.
