Crash Kills 61-Year-Old Wayne Woman, Police Say

Crash was Sunday morning at the intersection of Ratzer Road and Oakwood Drive, police say.

A Sunday morning car accident in Wayne claimed the life of a township woman, police announced in a release.

According to Wayne Lt. Daniel Daly, 61-year-old Rona Kling was tuning left from Oakwood Drive onto Ratzer Road at about 9:53 a.m. Sunday when her Mercedes struck a Ford F-150 traveling east on the roadway.

Kling was unconscious after the crash, and transported St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Paterson, Daly said.

She was pronounced dead at the hospital at 10:25 a.m., Daly said.

The driver of the Ford, William Spirig, 55, also of Wayne, was transported to St. Joseph’s, treated for minor injuries, and released, police said.

Cops said the investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Wayne Police Traffic Bureau at 973-633-3520.

Drive up to Beechwood to make a left- or Chestnut. Pick a road that you can see both directions of traffic clearly. At Oakwood, that corner property on the left obscures the driver's vision, but they a right to their own privacy as well. It's also an area with a 25 mph speed limit -but only during school hours. It's also a county road- not a town road, and it's 35 mph ( which is 40 mph when we consider the new math-rounding numbers guidelines). Any traffic study would conclude that placing a light at that corner would do more harm than good, and the fault happens when someone is making the left onto Ratzer, which is no fault of their own- it's currently a legal turn. The best proposal is to "dead end" the road by closing off the corner all together. This would benefit the school and the community. Make Beechwood Dr. the main entrance into the lake, diverting community vehicle traffic away from the school. The second best ( less bold ) proposal is to stop the left hand turn out out Oakwood onto Ratzer.

There is no left hand turn out of the school and people still do it. But a no left turn there would be ideal.

The tall fence on the corner property impedes sight lines when making a turn in either direction onto Ratzer Rd. Even when turning right off of Oakwood you can't see until you're nose out into the eastbound traffic. The town should get the owner to either shorten or move the fence closer to the house in order to make the corner safe for drivers. I understand the homeowner has rights on their property, but the safety of hundreds of drivers and passengers that use that intersection daily should prevail. The town should offer to cover the cost of the changes and can consider a tax credit or other benefit to the homeowner to in return for the public safety.
