Armed Robber Sought in Willowbrook Theft, Cops Say

Woman told police her purse was stolen at gunpoint outside Macy's early Saturday morning.

Police are looking for a man who allegedly stole a woman’s purse at gunpoint from her car at the Willowbrook Mall early Saturday morning, Capt. James Clarke said.

Police found an unoccupied vehicle in front of a Macy’s entrance at the mall Saturday at about 2:50 a.m., with the driver’s side door open, Clarke said. The owner of the vehicle was later found inside the store, saying she fled the vehicle when the man approached her outside, Clarke said.

According to police, the victim was attempting to close the driver’s side door while she placed her purse on the passenger seat. The man approached the vehicle and stood between the open door and vehicle, brandishing a small handgun, Clarke said.

The man stated he would not hurt the woman and told the victim not to scream, Clarke said. The victim ran away from the car and into the store, where she yelled for help, Clarke said.

When police arrived, the man had fled the scene, Clarke said. The Passaic County Sheriff’s Department K-9 unit responded but was unable to locate the individual.

A yellow and brown leopard “Betsie Johnson” purse was stolen, Clarke said. A small magazine to a pellet gun was found on the ground at the scene, Clarke said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Wayne Police at 973-694-0600.

Here's another perfect example of why qualified, adult, trained citizens should be allowed to carry a concealed weapon in N.J. Any criminal who points a deadly weapon at an innocent person should be shot. The authoritative economic research and evidence of states having passed concealed weapons licenses for private citizens has clearly proven that there is a strong decline in personal violent attacks (see research published by Dr. John Lott and others on CW permits) when CWP are legalized.

This is a classic example of a misunderstood man who needing help from the government and not knowing how to find it resorted to the next available action ... ARMED robbery. He is the victim because apparently the women, most likely a "1%" er did not willfully give him what she worked for thereby ruining his life and forcing him to use a gun in the act of simply "taxing" her for shopping at Willowbrook. Very much the same as the government would do. He will be found by police officers who must now put their own life on the line against an armed and confused soul, given a profoundly light sentence by a court, and continue his ways because everyone else is to blame and he isn't guilty until proven so or let off with a slap on the wrist. Studies will show if individuals have weapons, most likely they will miss. Do the studies also show how many of the attackers stain their shorts when they see the gun and flee?

Regarding your comments: "Studies will show if individuals have weapons, most likely they will miss. Do the studies also show how many of the attackers stain their shorts when they see the gun and flee?" Most authoritative studies indicate that criminals -- just knowing a person "may be legally armed with a weapon and CWP" reduces the attempts at personal violence. And, the data also indicate that the CWP holders who are properly trained, DON'T MISS. There's no trial, no criminal lying to a jury, and no cost to the public.

You got that right Flood Plain! Properly trained citizens dont miss! Also a person whom has a weapon is responsible with the weapon and others and has been properly trained in this respect.....to respect others e the weapon!

"likely a 1%" .."shopping @Willowbk"? can we instead 'assume' she was working@mall w.5 children home & "failed to give him.." what she worked for? Hes not misunderstood hes a criminal... Im goin to assume comments like that are sarcastic & we all realize the only help govt can offer is a 2x4 cell! .

Not so sure a pellet gun is a deadly weapon. Also not so sure I'm willing to give someone who's in the mall parking lot at 2:50 AM the power to be judge, jury, and executioner.

Like Clint Eastwood said "Go ahead, make my day" less criminals would be out there wondering if someone is going to point a bigger gun at them that they have if more people had a CW. Think about it.
