SEND A POSTCARD TO YOUR ELECTED OFFICIALS
“Today, I’m going to ask every person I can find to send a postcard to every politician they can think of with three words on it: Not One More.” -- Richard Martinez, father of son killed in the Santa Barbara shootings.
Analysis of Recent Mass Shootings
Using FBI data and media reports, Mayors Against Illegal Guns developed an analysis of mass shootings that took place between January 2009 and September 2013. The analysis found that there have been more than 90 mass shootings in this nearly five-year period.
The FBI defines a “mass shooting” as any incident where at least four people were murdered with a gun. Below are some of the reports more surprising findings:
- Mass shootings represent a small share of total US firearm homicides.
- There is a strong connection between mass shooting incidents and domestic or family violence: at least 57% of mass shootings surveyed were related to domestic or family violence.
- Those who serve and protect us, including law enforcement and military officers, are frequently the victims of mass shootings.

The single most important thing we can do to reduce gun violence is to require a criminal background check for every gun sale. Sixteen states and Washington, D.C., already do this for all handgun sales. In these states, 38 percent fewer women are shot to death by their partners, 39 percent fewer on-duty police officers are shot and killed, 48 percent fewer people commit suicide with guns, and there is 49 percent less gun trafficking.
