The DePaul Catholic Spartans won their first state group championship in 21 years Sunday by defeating Holy Spirit 35-16 in the Non-Public Group 2 playoff.

DePaul crushed Gloucester Catholic and Holy Cross 49-8 and 45-14, respectively, to get to the final.

Steve Speidel had two touchdowns for the Spartans. DePaul had lost its last four state championship appearances since it last won in 1992.

Coach John McKenna told NorthJersey.com that getting the win “was awesome” and that the “whole team” worked hard for this.”
