Area Woman Seeks Crowdfunding to Help Philippine Typhoon Victims

Maria Fe Quiapo started an Internet campaign to raise money to help family and friends who lost their homes in November's Typhoon Yolanda.

When a typhoon ripped through the Philippines last month, causing destruction and more than 6,000 deaths in its wake, nursing home worker Maria Fe Quiapo of Chatham could think only of her family there. Wondering how she could help the folks back home, she turned to crowdfunding as a means to raise money to help her family.

On the site GoFundMe.com, she told her story.

"Typhoon Yolanda devastated my hometown, Ormoc City, Leyte, rendering my family and friends literally without roofs on their heads," she wrote. "Now more than ever, they need my help, but the needs are so overwhelming and I can't do it alone.

"I appreciate any assistance you can give. Any amount will go a long way in rebuilding efforts."

The funds, she said, will go to help her parents, brother, sisters and friends whose Ormoc homes were blown away by the typhoon.

A month after setting up her GoFundMe campaign, $445 has been raised. The effort's goal is to collect $2,000.

Consider helping Maria Fe Quiapo help her family this holiday season, and check out other area GoFundMe efforts that could use your assistance.
