New Jersey Mycological Association meeting with guest speaker author Langdon Cook

Mark your calendar
for the March 2nd meeting of NJMA
:  Our speaker, Langdon Cook is the author of The Mushroom Hunters; On the Trail of an
Underground America.
We’ve heard about the commercial pickers
on the West Coast .   In his own words, Lang “infiltrate(d)
the commercial wild mushroom trade, a scrappy, mostly hidden and itinerant
enterprise that follows the mushroom flushes year-round, with echoes of Wild
West frontier-style capitalism and Gold Rush days gone by.”  Who’s picking?  Who’s buying?  Who’s getting rich?
Come to our meeting and find out.   [Open to the public]

From NYMS site:

“Langdon Cook, author of the award-winning book The
Mushroom Hunters: On the Trail of an Underground America,
will present a
slideshow talk of his experiences with commercial fungi harvesters. Follow the
supply chain of pickers, buyers, and chefs from patch to plate—and make stops
along the way at such famous hunting grounds as the North Coast of California
for winter mushrooms, matsutake camps in the Oregon Cascades, Washington’s wild
and woolly Olympic Peninsula, and even the far-flung morel bonanzas of Yukon
Territory. Commercial mushroom harvesting is the biggest (legal) all-cash
business in North America, with echoes of the Gold Rush and frontier-style
capitalism of yore. Find out how those delicious golden chanterelles, porcini,
and truffles wind up at your favorite restaurant.”
