What Should Go at the Wayne Towne Center Site?

Vornado Realty Trust purchased the rights to develop under-developed site.

Most of the Wayne Towne Center site has remained vacant for years now. JC Penny is the only store still in operation. The old Fortunoff building remains vacant, but is still on site.

What should go where this once booming mall was located? Let us know in the comments below.

I would love to see something like the Bergen Outlet Center on Route 4. Everybody loves a bargain, especially in this economy. Outlets do well in good times too. It would be a win for the stores and the shoppers.

One of the signs on the billboard says Dick's Sporting Goods. I have been to other locations and it is the best sporting goods store in America. That would be a good start. The Bergen Outlet center is a nice renovation of the previous property. It would be a traffic nightmare in the Wayne Towne Center location and something like that would have to come with a huge parking structure just like BOC. Not a bad idea but wondering whether two in such close proximity would be supportable. Seems like we have an over abundance of retail already in this area, not to mention the plans for the Xanadu site that were just announced recently.

I was thinking either a flood detention basin, and or a real town center concept such as they have elsewhere in the country, apartments, condos and housing mixed in with retail establishments. Mashpee Commons in Massachusetts is one such place.

Right across the road from Costco?

Flood detention basin makes a lot of sense, although probably unsightly. If it works from an engineering standpoint, they could eminent domain the whole mall area (with what money?) and do that. The "commons" idea is a good one and would be a great idea for the WH Mall site. Doubt it would work right on Rt. 46 like that. Would love to see the mall site rehabilitated. There was a town center concept being floated last year but have heard nothing about it. WH site is underperforming asset which recently reduced its property tax to the town. Would be a great way to introduce a walkable "downtown" to Wayne. One of the biggest knocks against our town is the lack of an identifiable "Main Street" area. It's kind of soul-less with all of the strip malls. In an ideal world, I'd love to see the stores from various strip malls around town funneled into a town center concept at the WH site. I believe the county has site plans and a proposed concept already that is very lovely. Could you imagine? The strip malls could be knocked down and green space added all over town. All we need is hundreds of millions of dollars and some people who want to make it happen!

Two words: Whole Foods

Richard, Great choice. I'm a big Whole Foods fan myself. I'd love to head just down Route 23 to go there instead of trekking to Paramus.

How about an ice rink!

I hate to disagree but Dicks would not do well since we have Models and Sports Authority. Also Dicks is very expensive to be around here, reason why its doing ok in Paramus because there aren't to many sporting goods around.

Yes! Whole Foods gets my vote.

dicks is still slated to open there, most likely in early 2013. Dicks is a much better store then modell's or sports authority.

Dicks would've opened a on time ago if there were another anchor store
