Updated: More than 10,000 in Wayne Without Power

Crews working to restore service, utility says.

More than 10,000 people in Wayne were without power Tuesday afternoon, PSE&G is reporting.

Around 20,000 Public Service Electric & Gas customers across Bergen and Passaic counties were without power Tuesday afternoon, a company spokeswoman said. 

An issue with a supply line at a substation in Wayne led to the widespread outages, spokeswoman Deann Muzikar said in a statement. Service was expected to be restored by 4 p.m. Tuesday.

PSE&G will be placing a mobile transformer in service.

Traffic lights, including ones on Ratzer Road and Hamburg Turnpike remain out. Police are directing traffic at several intersections. Residents should be cautious when approaching major intersections.

Businesses along Route 23 North in the Waynechester Plaza and across the highway on Route 23 South have power.

It is not know exactly how many customers were without power.

In Teaneck, as many as 2,000 customers lost power Tuesday, according to the PSEG online outage map. In New Milford, 501 - 2,000 customers lost power. According to the outage map, 501 - 2,000 customers in Hackensack went out.

Traffic lights along a portion of Cedar Lane went dark Tuesday morning, forcing police to setup traffic cones at Cedar Lane and River Road. Power around Cedar Lane has since been restored. 

Bergenfield had the highest number of reported outages in the area, with 2,001 - 5,000 customers out, according to the PSEG map. A transformer caught fire at West Church Street and North Prospect Avenue in Bergenfield, borough police said. 

In Glen Rock, police said several individuals had to be rescued from elevators after the outage hit.
