Town May Get Another $250K to Develop Athletic Fields

Town trying to turn a 12-acre plot of land on Alps Road into a recreation area.

The township may receive $250,000 to install athletic fields on an undeveloped track of land on Alps Road.

The Passaic County Open Space Trust Fund Advisory Committee has recommended the county Freeholder Board approve allocating the funds at its next meeting on Aug. 13.

The township would use the funds to develop the fields and install lights.

“My colleagues and I believe that residents and families should have parks and outdoor facilities to enjoy,” said T.J. Best, county freeholder and the board’s liaison to the advisory committee.

The board appropriated $200,000 for the project in December.

The town purchased the 12-acre track of land that borders DePaul Catholic High for $4.5 million in 2006. Officials will also use funds from the state’s Green Acers fund to complete the project.

The town is expected to go out to bid on the project this year. Officials will not know the exact cost of the project until bids come back.
