Smoking Ban Up for Vote, Towers Run This Week

Ordinance would ban smoking in all parks, recreation areas.

Here is a sample of what you may find on Wayne Patch this week:

  • The second annual Tunnel to Towers Run on Sunday, Sept. 9. The run will raise funds for Army Spc. Derek McConnell. McConnell, a double amputee, lost both of his legs when he stepped on an improvised explosive device while on patrol in Afghanistan in 2011.

A rememberance ceremony will be held at the town's 9/11 Memorial after the run.

  • The is scheduled to vote on an ordinance Wednesday .

The Council introduced the ordinance last month.

Individuals would be banned from smoking or even carrying a lighted cigarette, cigar, or pipe in all parks, recreational areas, and swimming facilities, including their parking lots and driveways. Electronic cigarettes would also be banned.

  • The Board of Education will hold its first regular meeting of the school year on Thursday, Sept. 6. The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the on Nellis Drive. We’ll attend the meeting and let you know what happens.
  • The Council may also approve an ordinance that would make Almadera Drive a one-way street. We’ll let you know what particulars of the ordinance are and why it was created.
  • We’ll attend the first day of school at and let you know of any new or exciting events going on there.
