No Injuries, Power Outages Reported Due to Earthquake

Quake measured 5.9 on the Richter Scale.

Wayne felt a 5.9-magnitude earthquake that originated in Virginia shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. 

The earthquake caused no local power outages and no injuries were reported, Sandy Galacio, coordinator of the township's Office of Emergency Management. 

"I felt the ground shake a little under my feet and thought to myself 'what was that?'," a shopper at the Waynechester Plaza on Route 23 said. "Thank goodness it didn't last long."

People working at Packanack Elementary School said they did not feel anything unusual. 

"We didn't feel anything here," said Roger Roglain, principal of Packanack Elementary School.

The USGS classified the quake in the New York metro area as a category IV which has "light shaking" and "no damage."

Local police departments said they received reports from numerous callers about their homes and businesses feeling like they shook for several seconds.

The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed that an earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale was felt in Virginia and the Washington, D.C. area at 1:53 p.m. Tuesday. That quake was a category VII.

The epicenter of the Virginia quake was located nine miles south of Mineral, Va.

The USGS is asking those who felt the earthquake to fill out an online survey to assist their information gathering.
