Breakfast May be Served at All Elementary Schools

Currently, breakfast is only served at John F. Kennedy and Ryerson elementary schools.

Elementary school students may have the opportunity to purchase a hot breakfast at school in September.

District officials are considering selling hot and cold breakfasts in all elementary schools beginning next school year. Eileen Albanese, Board of Education trustee, announced the possible move at a meeting recently.

Breakfast is currently only served at John F. Kennedy and Ryerson elementary schools. The high schools also serve breakfast.

The program would be funded through reimbursements from the state for students who are eligible for free or reduced-cost meals and revenue from paid meals, said Juanita Petty, the district’s business administrator.

Albanese said that the district would be sending a survey to parents to gauge their interest in the program.

“For working parents who need to drop their kids off at school early, this could be a really great thing,” Albanese said. “As long as there’s enough interest, I think it’s wonderful.”

If approved, the district would phase in the program beginning in September. hot and cold selections would be available.

Parents could sample various menu selections at a food tasting, Petty said.
