Moms Meet Mobsters at Junior Woman’s Club Fundraiser

Event raised money for The Valerie Fund.

Nolo Contendo, of the infamous Contendo crime family, called a meeting of the mobsters Tuesday night to announce his successor. But as the bosses entered the room, DiNotta, Nolo’s daughter, was curiously absent. It turns out she had been thrown in the river by a rival mobster. By the end of the night, Consigliere Vinnie Da Pooh was shot dead as the Bonana and Bambino families looked on in horror.

This was the hilarious scene at the Knights of Columbus in Pequannock. The Junior Woman’s Club of Wayne hosted a Murder Mystery Night and tricky tray for its annual State Project.

The Junior Woman’s Club of Wayne is a diversified group of 25 women representing many different ethnic backgrounds. The Juniors have served Wayne, and the surrounding area, for more than 30 years. They host charity and social service events on a regular basis.

The State Project is a two-year commitment the club makes to raise funds for a particular charity. The club is currently supporting The Valerie Fund, which provides comprehensive healthcare to children with cancer and blood disorders, said Wayne Juniors member Beverly Weed-Schertzer.

“All of our performances are interactive so the audience becomes part of the show," said Ruth Markoe, founder of Theater to Go, the group that put on the play. "The actors are seated throughout the room and give the guests clues to solve the crime."

Once the murderous mobster’s identity was revealed to the audience, the show was over and the raffle drawings began. Wayne businesses donated products and services for the evening’s tricky tray prizes, which included gift baskets and gift certificates.

Also in attendance was Wayne Councilwoman Lonni Miller-Ryan, who said of the event: “We laughed a lot and spent money for a good cause.”
