Laurelwood Arboretum Reopens After Sandy Damage

Laurelwood Arboretum has reopened. The nature preserve was closed for several months due to damage caused by Tropical Storm Sandy.

At least 15 large trees were knocked down and shrubbery was damaged. Some downed trees still have not been removed. The damaged areas will be restored.

The 30-acre arboretum is home to many different kinds of plants, shrubs, and animals, including birds.

Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum (FOLA) sponsors several educational and entertaining programs, including seminars on plants, herbs, butterflies, and other related topics. FOLA also sponsors several nature walks and other activities throughout the year.

A sensory garden opened last September. The area features a variety of plants designed to provide attendees with a new way to enjoy the arboretum.  

The facility is open from dawn to dusk. Visitors should dress appropriately to walk through snow and mud.

FOLA is accepting donations to help fund the arboretum’s restoration. Contributions can be mailed to FOLA, P.O. Box 2433, Wayne N.J. 07470. Volunteers are needed to help restore the facility. 

The arboretum is lcoated at 725 Pines Lake Drive West.
