Hydrant Malfunctions During Flushing Of Water System

Systematic flushing scheduled to end by Friday, May 11. Water may become discolored while work is conducted.

The township had to replace a fire hydrant on Valley Road due to a malfunction that occurred at about 11 p.m. on May 1.

The town’s water crew was working on the hydrant as part of the annual of the water system.

A pipe between the water main on Valley Road and the hydrant near the burst due to a malfunction with the hydrant, said Heather Vitz-Del Rio, the township’s superintendent for water and sewer. The pipe was shut off immediately. The pipe was replaced and the hydrant repaired on Saturday, May 5.

No one ran out of water because of the incident.

Part of Valley Road was damaged as a result of the incident. The roadway was repaired on Thursday, May 3.

Flushing of the system is expected to be complete by Friday.

Residents should try and use a minimal amount of water between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. until work is complete.

Water may become temporarily discolored due to sediment. As such, water should be allowed to run so any sediment in the lines, including those for washing machines, is flushed out.

If discoloration occurs for more than three hours call the water department’s office at 973-694-5090 between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
