Construction on New Hotel to Begin in September

New Hilton Garden Inn to be located on Valley Road near a Residence Inn.

A new Hilton Garden Inn will be built on the south side Valley Road.

Construction is expected to begin on the new 125-room facility in September, town Planner John Szabo said Friday. Work is expected to take three to six months.

The Zoning Board of Adjustment approved the application for the four-story hotel at 1601 Valley Road in March 2008. The property owner applied recently to slightly amend the application by changing the number of first-floor rooms.

Part of the five-acre property backs up against Nevins Road. A Residence Inn is already located on that street.

The section of Valley Road where the hotel will be built already contains several office buildings and a section of the William Paterson University campus. An Apple Montessori School and the Ice Vault arena area already on Nevins Road.

A representative from Hilton Garden Inns did not return messages seeking comment.

Tax records show the property to be valued at $900,000. More than $43,800 in taxes were assessed on the property in 2012, town records show.

“It’s a very positive thing for the town,” Szabo said. “It’s a great ratable. It offers another facility where people can get a room and we don’t have too many of those available right now and it’s a high-end ratable.”

Mayor Chris Vergano recently said that officials need to find ways to expand the township’s ratable base.

Editor's Note: An earlier version of this story stated that the property is valued at $90,000. The correct amount is $900,000.
