Home Uninhabitable After Basement Fire

Malfunctioning electrical panel causes blaze in Huron Avenue home.

A house is uninhabitable after a fire broke out in the basement late Friday night, authorities said.

Fire Companies 1 and 5 responded to a fire at 28 Huron Ave. just before midnight on Monday, July 15, said fire commissioner Steven Toth.

Firefighters discovered a fire in the basement with “heavy” smoke, Toth said. Residents reported hearing a loud bang in the basement.

Toth said authorities determined that the main electrical panel to the house malfunctioned, starting the fire, which spread to the rafters in the basement, Toth said.

“With the help of an aggressive attack on the fire, the damage was confined to the basement, with some smoke damage reported to the upper floors,” Toth said.

Public Service Electric & Gas disconnected power to the house, rendering it uninhabitable.

The two residents are staying with family members until repairs are made to the house, Toth said.

There were no injuries reported.

The Wayne First Aid Squad also responded to the fire.
