High School Graduates Earned $129K in Scholarships

Five students were admitted to Ivy League schools.

More than 140 graduating high school seniors received more than $129,000 in scholarships this year.

That is one of the statistics released by the Wayne Public School District on Wednesday.

Five were accepted by Ivy League Schools, Cornell University and Columbia University.

Eight were named Advanced Placement Scholars with Distinction. These students received an average score of 3.5 on all Advanced Placement exams taken in 2012 and scored a three or more on five or more of these exams. Five is the highest score a student can earn on an Advanced Placement exam.

There were 10 Advanced Placement Scholars with Honors. These students received an average score of 3.25 on all Advanced Placement exams taken in 2012 and scored a three or more on four or more of these exams.

There were four National Merit Scholarship Finalists and 18 National Merit Scholarship Commended students.

Ninety percent of graduates opted to continue their education after high school; 75 percent of graduates will attend four-year colleges.

All 700 students passed the New Jersey High School Proficiency Assessment exam.

“It’s sometimes effective to employ numbers to illustrate a group’s success — and this is one such case,” Superintendent Ray Gonzalez said in a statement. “Our graduating seniors — many of whom were in Wayne’s schools since their first day in kindergarten — excelled on many academic levels. Certainly, they’ve made this school district and this town very proud.”
