Hamburg Turnpike Construction Project 'On Schedule'

Project is still a year away from being complete officials say. County engineer holding public meeting on the project next week.

The construction project on Hamburg Turnpike is proceeding on schedule, but it is still about a year away from being completed.

Workers shifted one of the westbound lanes and made it three feet wider this week and PSE&G continues to replace utility poles in front of ShopRite.

The project involves installing jug handles, eliminating left turns, and widening lanes to improve traffic flow and repair one of the most heavily traveled thoroughfares in the county.

“If it hadn’t been for Tropical Storm Sandy last year we’d be in really good shape,” said Tim Mettlen, assistant county engineer and the project manager, noting that the weather plays a factor in how fast work is done.

“There’s a lot of stuff you can’t do when it’s raining,” Mettlen said.

Cablevision, Verizon, and other cable companies will install their fiber-optic cable as the next phase of the project. The work should take five months, Mettlen said.

County engineer Steve Edmond is hosting a public meeting on the project at the municipal complex April 17 from 7 to 8 p.m.; the meeting will also be broadcast live on cable channel 77.
