Floodgates Raised in Anticipation of Nor'easter

Five feet of water drained from behind Pompton Lake dam, officials confirm.

The floodgates on the Pompton Lake dam have again been raised in anticipation of a nor’easter forecast to bring rain to North Jersey.

Mayor Chris Vergano and Assemblyman Scott Rumana confirmed the gates were opened and five feet of water drained out from the lake. The gates will remain open to allow additional water to drain from the lake and maintain the amount of water behind the dam, Rumana said.

The gates are controlled by the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

The same procedure was done before Hurricane Sandy struck North Jersey last week to mitigate any potential flooding threat that storm posed.

“Hopefully, this is how it will be before major storms from now on,” Rumana said. “The procedure we now see development is that when the gates after a storm the water is immediately replenished behind the dam. We need to show the DEP that this is a flowing body of water. Now, we won’t get that surge of water coming down.”

No power in wayne nj near lakeside ave now jcp& l saying sunday this is sooowrong with the high taxes we pay
Scondo November 07, 2012 at 02:38 PM
Could someone connect me up with the corelationship between high taxes and power transmission? Sandy produced just over an inch of rain and because of that low level of rainfall posed little threat of flooding. Hopefully we will be spared this in this storm, which is now tracking further east and is likely to produce snow.

Pines Lake ... now on our 10th full day with NO POWER. I believe all JCP&L service users must lobby our Governor to require this powerless power company to no longer refer to us as "customers" and be forced, instead, to call us "victims" until/unless they can prove that they do, indeed, own a pair of BIG BOY PANTS and are willing to wear them - acting, for once, like a grown-up business that understands its role & its obligation to the people who send them ungodly amounts of cash each month. If that fails, then at least force them to call this particular service package "THE DARK AGES INTERMITTENT ELECTRICAL SUPPLY AND NEGLIGENCE PACK." It's the year 2012 and my family is living in a dark, frozen cave. The only difference between us & the neanderthals of long, long ago, is that the neanderthals lived with the hope of Darwinian progress. Honestly, what hope do we have that a large, faceless conglomerate like "First Energy" (JCP&L parent) is going to suddenly decide to take their gobs of cash profits & invest them in designing and implementing a 21st Century system of infrastructure and enhanced customer communication capabilities - especially when its so much more fun to simply keep their existing state-of-the-fart grid limping along and use that cash to create an even wider gulf between First Energy executives and the other 99% of us? When they see us, they see SUCKERS. I can hear them now ... at their next Board Meeting ... "Let them eat frozen cake in the dark."

Scondo, you are really out of touch or you just enjoy critizing people. Clearly maria is frustrated with the fact she pays high taxes, high utility bills...when you pay that much there is an expectation you have will the services that any 1st world country should have. To be without power for 10 days I must imagine is absolutely horrible and the blame starts flying. Scondo, take a look around you before you ask inane questions. In the short time I have been on Patch and occasionaly read comments, yours are by far the most anserine. Nose isn't much better,
eyes wide shut November 07, 2012 at 03:17 PM
People that are not effected by things are usually the first to make useless comments. But when the shoe is on the other foot...........

Thanks Scott for looking out for all the folks down stream. Nice to know that there is someone out there taking the bull by the horns. Now how about power.??? So wrong for so many people in J.C.P.L. area to not have power. I know the mayor has done every thing possible but someone needs to get J.C.P.L. attention. I think it is time for the pit bull !!!!!

Waaaaaaaa! Look at the people who have nothing! Waaa j can't watch real housewives waaaa I can't go on my computer and Facebook waaaa I can't charge my IPad! Go buy a generator and work through this! Toughen up people! Some people have nothing!!!!
Wayne Resident November 07, 2012 at 04:54 PM
jay - you are an idiot. Some people need power etc that work out of their home to earn a living.
Scondo November 07, 2012 at 06:13 PM
WR this thread is dealing with flooding potential from the Nor easter, it really is not about the power outage. That is elsewhere on Patch. We should not experience the type of flooding that we had from the 2011 storms . If your complaint is about JCP&L you ought to be taking it to the proper thread.

I have a generator and it's costing me a lot of money to keep it going. I wait in line every day to fuel it and every thing smells like gasoline. Don't care about TV, just want to keep my family safe and warm. If you think 10 days without power in an area mostly free of damage is acceptable, there's something wrong with you. Yes, we are more fortunate then a lot of people, but that doesn't make us unimportant. Last year we lost power for 8 days, but at least we saw people working on it and I could get fuel. This year there is no sign of anyone yet and no one can give us any answers. So, lighten up. P.S. This is posted from out of town because I have no power or connectivity.

WR Take your own advice. "Wayne Resident 4:57 pm on Monday, June 4, 2012 Bill, you don't fix things by complaining on a BB "
C6 November 07, 2012 at 08:16 PM
jay you MUST have power to write something like that. Not only that, think before you speak-NOT everyone has money to go put and buy a generator!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wayne Resident November 07, 2012 at 08:22 PM
Scondo, You must be kidding, you are looking at my BB history - jeez, get a life.
Scondo November 07, 2012 at 08:24 PM
Oh, thought you said you didn't write that, Pinnochio your nose is growing.
Wayne Resident November 07, 2012 at 08:26 PM
You think I remember what I wrote in June?
gendisarray November 07, 2012 at 09:35 PM
What, you need to have the "corelationship" between what you wrote in June and what you posted today "connected up" for you?
Nose Wayne November 07, 2012 at 10:04 PM
HEY WAYNE, those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. And you seem to have grown an awful big set lately. I have my FACTS before iI post something on here. I don't badmouth people either. Maybe you should take a lesson from some of the people on here.
Nose Wayne November 07, 2012 at 10:13 PM
Some of us were smart and bought a GENERATOR after Irene instead of wasting it on unimportant things. I never lost power, but my neighbors did. Guess who ran all my neighbors refrigerators, cell phone chargers and heat ? I DID, because it was the right thing to do. Try doing something nice for somebody else except yourself next time Wayne!! And stop your BITCHIN all the time.

Scondo, aren't you the genius who said the floodgates had nothing to donwithbthe flooding? Duh.
jay1296 November 08, 2012 at 04:08 PM
No I was smart enough to be prepared. I'm sure you must have IPads and cars you can't pay for, but...... Sometimes in life you have to ask yourself what will I do if there is a crisis? Be PREPARED!! Always have a backup plan in life!
Scondo November 08, 2012 at 04:17 PM
@Rob Burke , Your presence on our little town forum boards has been sorely missed, good to see that you are alive and well. Regarding your missive of earlier today, thank you for your kind words I blush at your calling me genius. And actually in truth, what I said was the flood gates did not cause the flooding. I am sure that distinction would not be lost on one with your legalistic capability. Rob Burke 6:20 am on Thursday, November 8, 2012 Scondo, aren't you the genius who said the floodgates had nothing to donwithbthe flooding? Duh. My own theory is that the prevailing weather conditions of 2011 caused the flooding , rather than the gates per se. I would however be open to persuasion if someone, perhaps you, could point me toward an emprical study that concludes that the gates are in fact the cause. http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2012/01/remarkable_2011_weather_sets_n.html I am happy though, that the PTBs listen to those most likely to be affected and accede to the request for gate opening in the face of threatening weather systems along with the lowering of storage reservoirs to mitigate against flooding. As always, best regards.
