Educators, ShopRite Donate $3,000 in Gift Cards to Flood Victims

WEA President Sean Spiller: 'We knew we had to do something to help.'

The Wayne Education Association (WEA) and ShopRite have donated $3,000 in ShopRite gift cards to flood victims.

WEA President Sean Spiller and ShopRite assistant manager Jose Manroquin presented Mayor Christopher Vergano with the gift cards today at the Shop Rite on Hamburg Turnpike. The WEA donated $1,500 worth of cards and ShopRite matched the gift.

“We came back from summer break and all everyone was talking about was the flooding. We knew we had to do something to help. We’ve had a lot of teachers and students whose homes were flooded,” Spiller said. “It’s been heartbreaking to see how flooding has affected the people we see everyday, especially the children.”

The gift cards are in $25 and $50 increments. The Wayne Organizations Active in Disasters will distribute the cards to at least 100 families.

Vergano was very appreciative.

“It’s better than we ever could have imagined,” Vergano said. “It’s so great when residents, businesses, and our educators come together like this to support each other. We have such dedicated people here in town.”
