Construction Begins On Hamburg Turnpike Project

Jug handles, bridges will be constructed along heavily-traveled roadway.

Residents who frequently travel on Hamburg Turnpike should be prepared for some delays for several months to come.

The road project at the Hamburg Turnpike and Valley Road intersection has begun, county personnel announced on Friday.

The $9.4 million project is expected to take approximately 20 months to complete. The major work of the project involves installing jug handles on the heavily-traveled roadway.

One ramp will be constructed between the Chase Bank building and the former Casey O’Toole’s site. The move will allow westbound traffic to turn left onto Valley Road.

Another ramp will be installed between the Valley National Bank and Caldwell Banker parking lot and the Ramapo Shopping Center to allow eastbound traffic to turn left onto Valley Road.

Hamburg Turnpike will be widened from Church Lane to just east of the driveway for Shop Rite.

Three new bridges will be constructed as part of the project. The county did not say where the bridges would be located.

A center median barrier will be placed on Hamburg Turnpike for the entire length of the roadway except where the road intersects with Valley Road and Hinchman Avenue.

New water, sewer lines, and a storm water drainage system will be installed.

In a separate project, Hamburg Turnpike from Colfax Road to Black Oak Ridge Road

Hope they put BIGGER pipes at the Valley Road Intersection. Every time it rains, the manhole covers are floating in the intersection, sometimes several feet in the air!!!

When you say, "A center median barrier will be placed on Hamburg Turnpike for the entire length of the roadway except where the road intersects with Valley Road and Hinchman Avenue, do you mean from Pompton Falls (one end) all the way to Paterson (the other)?

Donatello, The center median barrier will continue from just before Furno Place where it ended, all the way to halfway up the hill past Plaza Square Shopping Center (Shop-Rite) where It will end. After Valey/Hinchman is done, they are going to finish the barrier between Manor Drive and Preakness Shopping Center with a jug handle for Alps Road.

They have made the Hamburg turnpike going towards valley road from shoprite a single lane since yesterday (nov 15th, 2012). It took me 45 minutes to get from atlantic stewardship bank to colfax road last night to pick up my son from day care. The most ridiculous plan ever. I had to also miss my classes in the university because of this traffic jam. This morning it was the same issue and it took me more than 35 mins to go from duncan lane to colfax road to drop off my son. How long is this project going to take? Where can we find more information on this plan? Is there a telephone number to place complaints?
