Cameras Aim to Improve Traffic Flow on Routes 23 and 202

Work is part of $5.3 million resurfacing project.

New cameras designed to improve traffic flow and capacity will be installed on Route 23 as part of a $5.3 million resurfacing project scheduled to begin in mid-April.

The new image detection cameras will replace existing underground loop detectors at six intersections. They will be linked to traffic signals and help maximize traffic capacity and detect vehicles waiting to enter or cross the highways and activate a traffic signal sequence.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) will mill and repave two a half miles of Route 23, in both directions, from where Routes 202 and 23 converge in Wayne to where the highways split north of Ratzer Road, a distance of two and a half miles.

Route 23 between the Route 202 interchange to Alexander Avenue in Pequannock, in both directions, will be resurfaced.

The DOT will also make surface repairs to the Route 202 bridge over Mountainview Boulevard, the Route 23 bridge over the Pompton River, and the Newark-Pompton Turnpike bridge over Route 202.

Work that requires lane closures will be performed at night in order to minimize the impact to traffic. The DOT will maintain all travel lanes during daytime hours although traffic shifts may be necessary.

Construction signs are scheduled to be installed this week. The initial stage of construction is not expected to impact traffic.

Message signs will provide motorists with advanced notification of traffic pattern changes. Motorists should check DOT's traffic information Web site, www.511nj.org, for construction updates and real-time travel information.

"DOT is committed to maintaing our transportation network in a state of good repair," said DOT Commissioner James Simpson.
