Band Mixes Rock With Orchestral Music

Wayne-based Waking Lights named one of a dozen New Jersey bands that should be listened to immediately, according to one magazine.

Waking Lights has been named one of 12 New Jersey bands “you should listen to right now” by Paste magazine.

The Wayne-based band is named after the glowing illumination of the New Jersey skyline as seen from the Lincoln Tunnel.

Waking Lights was formed in 2005. Brothers Matthew and Tommy Maroulakos, Dana LaMarca, Kyle McCammon, and Nicole Scorsone “are more of a family than a band,” according to their Web site.

The quintet’s musical style is independent folk rock with the sounds of the violin and cello mixed in, creating what the band calls “an organic aural experience.”

The Deli magazine describes Waking Light’s music as “catchy, stomping, energetic, and head bobbing inducing. Their songs contain both rock and folk elements, sometimes alternating between the two while still retaining their unforgettable feel."
