Alleged Burglars Caught, Leaders Chosen Top Local News

Here is a recap of the past week on Wayne Patch.

A new council president was selected, Board of Educate trustees were sworn in, and a pair of alledged burglars was arrested.

Those were some of the top stories that happened in Wayne this past week.

Bello Picked as Council President

Councilwoman Nadine Bello was elected council president for 2013 at the township’s annual reorganization meeting on Wednesday.

Bello, who represents the 6th Ward, was unanimously elected to the position.

Education Trustees Sworn In

Eileen Albanese, Kim Essen, and Michael Bubba were sworn in to three-year terms on the Wayne Board of Education on Thursday. Mitchell Badiner was appointed president. Essen is an incumbent.

Student Raises More Than $900 for Injured Officer

Kevin Hughes sold hundreds of candy canes to raise money for Officer Bob Franco and his family. To date, he has raised more than $900 and the Wayne Valley student coninutes to receive donations.

YouTube Video Leads to Arrest of Alleged Burglars

Ahmet Islami, 20, of Haledon, and his girlfriend, Marjorie Alva, 21, of Elmwood Park, were each charged Friday with two counts of burglary, theft and receiving stolen property.

The couple was seen on video Dec. 3, asking an Oxbow Place resident if they could retrieve a football from the backyard, Wayne Police said. The video was filmed by a home security system. Police released the footage last week that was also posted on YouTube.

The pair are suspected of burglarizing two Oxbow Place homes. Jewelry was taken from both homes, police said.
