What Freedom Means to a Shelter Cat

Freedom: Seen through the eyes of a shelter animal...

At the Wayne Township Animal Shelter, we are fortunate to have a room that we call the "free roaming cat room."  This special room is a chance for a few of our furry friends to experience freedom for a while outside of their cages.

It's amazing how happy our cats are just being in this small and simple room. Even though it's not much bigger than most people's bathrooms, it means the world to them.  They are able to stretch their legs, socialize, lounge, walk around, and more importantly, just simply be a cat.

These cats usually spend their hours bored and lonely in a shelter cage.  They watch the door closely each time it opens, hoping someone gives them a chance and a forever home.  Some have been waiting a very long time for no good reason.  They are repeatedly overlooked with no choice but to continue to wait in their cages.

They get a small taste of freedom that our "free roaming cat room" allows, but it breaks my heart to see them so happy with this temporary opportunity.  It makes me sad because they don't even realize what true freedom is.

Some cats that are born in the shelter don't know how much better it can get in a big house where they are free to roam all the time, and have a loving owner to cuddle with too.  They just appreciate the simple things in this room and accept their fate and continue to wait patiently.

I think we can all learn a lot from shelter animals.  Even after being abandoned, abused and unloved, they still remain the same loving soul and pure at heart.

They are always willing to give another person a chance, even after they have been abandoned and abused by people, some repeatedly.  And all the while, they never stop appreciating the very simplest things in life.
