Van Peenen's Closes After 83 Years

Family-owned business was founded in 1929. Company started by delivering milk to people's homes.

The 83-year-old Van Peenen’s Dairy on Valley Road has closed.

The family-owned business was forced to shut down operations on Tuesday.

The 2-acre property, normally buzzing with activity and the coming and going of delivery trucks, has been eerily quite since then.

A woman who answered the phone Wednesday evening said, “There’s nobody here anymore. Everybody’s gone. The bank forced us to close.” The woman would not give her name and declined further comment.

Leonard Singer, the company’s attorney, did not respond to messages seeking comment.

The third-generation business has been marred in financial trouble of late.

The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this year. That filing came 14 months after a federal court awarded a $767,000 judgment, plus interest and other costs, against the Van Peenen brothers who own the company.

Van Peenen Property, LLC, listed on township tax files as owning the property, owes the town nearly $64,000 in taxes, including more than $8,200 in interest and nearly $2,300 in penalties.

Marinus Van Peenen and his wife Gerturude founded in the company as a home delivery milk service in 1929.

“I could remember like it was yesterday that their trucks could be seen not just in Wayne but outside the township too,” said Councilman Joseph Schweighardt. “It’s sad to see them go. A great business and a great family runs it."

this is just one the many van peenen businesses that exist im sure they will jump into another such as construction. its very sad but clearly a local milk company couldn't keep up with large scale manufacturers. good luck to them, great family

This is sad, but small businesses like this are hard to keep modern. I am sure they will get a lot of money when they sell the lot.

Brad, they are in Bankruptcy, not only do they owe the town a huge sum of money, they owe all their creditors huge sums too. Look for that property to be sold by the Bank.

I'm a grandchild of the van peenens and I'd appreciate every one to keep their comments to themselves unless its a positive one. And unless u know the facts of what happened its not your business to make acusations or assumptions. I'd like my grandparents name to stay respectful. Thank u!

Wow, I am so saddened by this news. I lived right behind the farm, on Andover Drive as a kid, I remember feeding the tall grass to the cows through the fence between their property and mine, plus, my father was friendly with Jake Van Peenen. What a great family. I know Ray, and Linda as well. We ALWAYS used to get the Van Peenen Milk delivered to us weekly...miss those days...

I don't see any reason for this article to even be here. The Van Peenen family has touched hundreds of residents in a positive way, for as long as any of us can remember. From the parades and the 4H fairs to class field trips in the 1960's-70's. Every long time resident knows at least 1 member of the Van Peenen family, and many know a dozen or more. Good Luck !!!

Yes there are many positives of the Van Peenen name when originated when it opened and ran with dignity. I didn't mention names and I didn't mention personal facts. I do have a right to my opinion and probably the only person who have the guts to give it.. whats posted is public knowledge of whats owed. I do know some things you probably don't know so please don't take it personal as I did not create the negative, the remainder of the family has. Also from what Ive herd your grandparents were good and respectful people, something you don't see or hear anymore and I do wish the best for the families regardless of how I feel.

VP grandchild, don't let these nonsense remarks get to you. People love to talk out their behinds and bash a good name like yours. Your family is full of wonderful people, so don't let these jealous individuals get to you. Perhaps some of them may have had a run in with one or more of your family members, they do not know the good nature of your family values that stemmed from your grandparents trickling down to you. Chin up sweetheart, you are a VanPeenen, a beautiful birthright, be proud. Many booming businesses that began so many years ago are gone now, it's a sign of the times, not by wrong doings. Best wishes to all of you :(

It's here because it's news.....try feeling sorry for the good decent people that are owed money from the Van Peenens that will never see a dime.........

My last nights post was removed and I don't know why when I didn't say anything wrong except my opinion... Isn't it called freedom of speech? Well lets see if this is better .....Oh really? what parades have they paid for? You scratch my back i scratch yours? ahhhhh that you don't mention. Must I put out facts? lets stop acting like we all didn't know this happened years ago. Why wasn't this published when the records were public? let me guess? favoritism? Has Van Peenen done anything else for this town since everyone graduated? hummmm. Don't confuse my opinion to hatred because there isn't any here. I'm just tired of the fake-ness of some of the people who have had nothing good to say about most of them. My opinions have nothing to do with the grandparents. Read carefully before you judge.

At Dead Hoffa! Thank you for stepping up. This town and site need real people with real opinions. None of this bologna stuff. They wont tell you the thousands that they owe, food they have taken away from families from monies owed. Lets all give them a chest bump for what they did. Thank you again for your courage!

Fboy, I didn't get beat by the Van Peenens because I had a better lawyer than they did! I'm grateful I have the resources to make these types of "business people" pay for goods and services rendered in good faith. Good faith being a term that they do not care to understand. In life we all reap what we sow. The hammer will soon drop on the the other "one" as well that has left a huge trail of debt and deceit......

Good for you and god bless!
