JUNE HERSH, AUTHOR OF "RECIPES REMEMBERED" TO SPEAK AT SHOMREI TORAH

You may have heard her on the Joan Hamburg Show, but now you can hear and meet her in person at Shomrei Torah in Wayne.  June Feiss Hersh burst upon the Jewish cookbook scene with Recipes Remembered: A Celebration of Survival.  Much more than just a cookbook, Recipes Remembered is a treasury of stories from 80 Holocaust survivors recounting their origins (e.g. Poland, Austria, Germany, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, and Greece), what and whom they lost, and how they created new lives in the United States.  Many of them came to this country with little else but remembered recipes or memories of food that they had eaten before the world of their childhood was destroyed.  Now in its third printing, the response to the book was immediate and enthusiastic:  It sold out its first printing within two weeks.  Proceeds from the sale of the book go to support the Museum of Jewish Heritage—A Living Memorial to the Holocaust.

Shomrei Torah’s Sisterhood is excited to announce that Ms. Hersh will speak about her remarkable cookbook on Wednesday, November 2nd, at 7:30 pm at Shomrei Torah, 30 Hinchman Avenue, Wayne, NJ.  Sisterhood invites everyone (including men!) to attend this very special night.  Advance RSVP for $36 includes the speaker, her book, dessert and coffee.  Without the book, the cost is $10 in advance or $15 at the door.

In addition to traditional recipes, the NY Times noted that “this lavishly illustrated book …[has]  plenty of new ideas to explore, including an Italian Sunday sauce, potato soup made with a browned roux, a cabbage pie wrapped in puff pastry and a feather-light chocolate roll of exquisite simplicity.”

At Shomrei Torah, Ms. Hersh will autograph not only Recipes Remembered, but also her newest book, just released this September, called The Kosher CarnivoreThe Ultimate Meat and Poultry Cookbook.  Whether kosher clueless or kosher committed, readers will find a breadth of great recipes and a wealth of information.  A portion of the proceeds from this book goes to support Mazon- the Jewish Response to Hunger.
