GALA HONORING ARLENE AND MICHAEL MARKS

SHOMREI TORAH’S ANNUAL GALA TO HONOR ARLENE AND MICHAEL MARKS

From working bingo to delivering challahs, from educating Shomrei Torah’s children to keeping a roof over their heads, Arlene and Michael Marks have contributed their talents and time to Shomrei Torah in so many ways ever since joining this Wayne Conservative Congregation in 1992.  The Congregation, in turn, shows its appreciation on Saturday, February 12, 2011 when Mike and Arlene are honored at Shomrei Torah’s Annual Gala with music, dancing, delicious food, an open bar, and a commemorative Ad Journal.

Mike served as House Chair for three years and was responsible for solving a problem that had plagued Shomrei Torah since its installation – the basement that always flooded.  What used to be referred to jokingly as the “indoor pool,” is now a comfortable room used for a host of activities.  The new parking lot, new fascias and gutters, and the repair of the roof and stone arch were all accomplished under Mike’s thoughtful direction.  Mike was even responsible for repairing the large screen television used by the Men’s Club for its famous tailgate parties.  Hey, no TV, no party!

While Mike kept the building in shape for future generations, Arlene was helping to shape the minds of those future generations.  She began working for the shul’s PTO, served as a Class Parent, and eventually became PTO co-chair.  Under her leadership, she introduced Family Bingo, book fairs, clothing drives, and numerous other mitzvah projects and fundraisers to help the Religious School and the community.  She also served on the Education Committee and eventually became its Chair for three years, during which time, she worked on curriculum updates, staff reports, and headed the principal search committee.  For the past three years, Arlene has also served on the synagogue’s Board of Trustees and for the past two, on its Fundraising Committee.

To register for the Gala, contact the synagogue office at 30 Hinchman Avenue, Wayne, NJ 07470 or 973-696-2500 or office@ShomreiTorahWCC.org.
