Concert Series to Showcase Several Musical Styles

Wayne resident wants to bring attention to county park system.

A free concert series will be held at Garret Mountain Reservation throughout the summer. The series is designed to promote awareness of the parks system of Passaic County.

John Bartlett, a Wayne resident, is chairman of the Friends of the Passaic County Park System, which is sponsoring the series. The group was created two years ago to find alternative sources of funding for the parks.

The Friends of the Essex County Parks has run a similar concert series for 17 years. The series has provided a rejuvenated interest in the Essex County parks system.

“In 17 years, we would like for the Friends of Passaic Valley Parks to look similar to what the Friends of the Essex County has done,” Bartlett said.

The Friends planned out the concert series to reflect the variety of musical interests county residents appreciate.

The series will begin Thursday, July 28 at 7 p.m. with a performance by famed Latin singer Jose Alberto “El Canario."

“This is a great way to kick off this series,” Bartlett said. “I am not really familiar with Salsa music, but we are pleased at how excited people are at him coming.”

A concert entitled Rocksplosion is scheduled for Aug. 4. Barlett said bands will perform music by Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi.

Bartlett said fans of doo-wop music will enjoy the Dupress on Aug. 11. Motown fans should enjoy Harold Melvin's music on Aug. 18.

The Silverio Starlite Orchestra will perform Sept. 15.

The concerts will be held at the refurbished boathouse on the reservation. See the attached flyer for more information.
