Tunnels to Towers Race Honors Heroes

Funds will help soldier Derek McConnell who lost both his legs while on patrol in Afghanistan.

The second annual was held Sunday at Wayne Valley High School. 

The run honors Stephen Siller, a New York City firefighter who died on 9/11, and raises money for a fondation created in his honor.

Siller was stuck in traffic on his way to the World Trade Center on 9/11 so he got out of his car and ran with 75 pounds of equipment on to the site where he died.

The event also raised money for Army Spc. Derek McConnell. McConnell was in Afghanistan in 2011 on patrol when he stepeed on an homeland incendary device and was badly injured. He lost both legs and suffered numerous other injuries. 

McConnell was at the race and spoke of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. He said that we should never forget 9/11.

Local firemen, police officers, emergency medical technicians, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, participated in the run.

A rememberance ceremony was held at the township's 9/11 Memorial after the run.
