High School Student Selling Candy Canes to Help Injured Police Officer

A Wayne Valley High School student is doing his part to help injured police officer Bob Franco.

Kevin Hughes and a few of his friends are roaming the hallways this week selling candy canes and donating the proceeds to Franco, a friend of Hughes’ family.

“He’s a volunteer and risks his life everyday to help keep us safe,” Hughes said. “Whenever someone like that is hurt we have an obligation as a community to help [him or her].”

Hughes has raised slightly more than $400. He wants to raise $750 by the end of the week. The sale ends Friday. Hughes and his friends are members of the school’s National Honor Society chapter.

Franco, a father of three children, was severely injured when a tree fell on the vehicle he was in the night of Superstorm Sandy. Initially immobilized, Franco has steadily recovered from the incident.  He underwent seven hours of surgery following the accident.

Several fundraisers have been held for Franco and his family this year.

Farms View and Da Vinci Ristorante donated a portion of their sales from a day of business recently. Two Wayne women organized a charity run in the days following the accident. Lakeside Pub held a charity concert last month.

The Wayne UNICO club sold Poinsettias earlier this year and gave the proceeds to Franco.
