Community Corner

SpotCrime's mission is to be an advocate for open, equal, and fair access to crime data.

Last week we announced the release of SpotCrime Catapult, free software for police agencies allowing them to digitally release public crime data in an open format to anyone. We've already seen a lot of interest from police agencies across the US. Check out the press release here http://bit.ly/15Rb7Os

Catapult was created because SpotCrime's mission is to be an advocate for open, equal, and fair access to crime data. We strive to be part of the equation of delivering crime data to the public, but not to be the exclusive solution. As far as we know, we are the only crime mapping company that has this specifically as a goal and the only company that gives historical data away for free.

At SpotCrime, we are building innovative services and partnerships that deliver crime data to the public faster. We will not participate in any system that fosters data discrimination or slowing down the data to the public. Our initiative is to encourage police agencies to be fair with the public and the press. By giving data to a proprietary vendor, the press's ability to timely report news is diminished.

Help your community become a safer place. Encourage your police department to release a public crime data file that anyone can consume. Let them know about resources like SpotCrime Catapult.

We are all in this together. We all want to see a reduction in crime, so why can't we all share this information openly?

Sincerely,
