Gun bill advocates protest Christie's upcoming RGA appearance

Members New Jerseyans for Safety Gun Violence announced yesterday they will follow Christie to take part in a protest of his recent “cowardly veto” of a gun bill that sought to reduce the size of ammunition magazines.

“Governor Christie has left gun violence prevention advocates no other option than to reach out to him publicly, as he has refused to meet with Sandy Hook families privately and clearly does not want to engage in meaningful conversations about gun reforms,” the group said in a statement.

Christie argued that if he signed the bill, it would defy “common sense to believe that imposing a new and entirely arbitrary number of bullets that can be lawfully loaded into a firearm will somehow eradicate, or even reduce, future instances of mass violence.”

The controversial bill and subsequent veto stirred a sharp rebuke from some parents of first graders who were killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. They lobbied for a meeting with the governor and were denied a sit down. They labeled the veto a “cowardly political move.”

Christie is scheduled to attend a retail campaign stop with Foley in Greenwich in the late afternoon, followed by closed fundraisers.
