As we are all dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, I see that there are many emergency resources and assistance for people, yet there are little or no programs in-place to accomodate pets. People already face issues with evacuations, etc., and unfortunately those with pets can face much greater challenges than those without pets.
So, it prompted me to search to find more information about what pet owners can do in emergency situations. The best tactic is to try to plan ahead and have an emergency plan in-place for your pets so that when disaster does strike, at least there are some options ready or available instead of being at a loss as to what to do and being in a very desperate situation.
Here are some resources from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in regard to planning for your pets safety during times of natural disaster. They offer checklists, brochures, videos and other helpful information for pet owners: http://www.ready.gov/animals
I sincerely hope that you, your family and pets have made it through the hurricane safely and that this information will be helpful to you in planning for the future.

Thank you for this story. Don't know what I would do without my puppy, she is not even a year old yet.

You're welcome! Its good to know that you love her so much, and taking precautions for her future means you're a caring and responsible dog owner and she's lucky to have you, as you are to have her, I'm sure. And with a young pup like that, you've got so many great years ahead of you. I hope this helps you and your pup. :)
