William Paterson Student Accused of Sexual Assault
John D. Rankin, 24, allegedly sexually assaulted girl while he was a coach at Park Ridge High.
A William Paterson University student is accused of sexually assaulting a former Park Ridge High School student while he was a coach there, authorities said.
John D. Rankin, 24, of Woodcliff Lake, was charged with sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child, Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said Thursday.
Rankin allegedly sexually abused a former Park Ridge High School female student. The abuse began in 2009 and continued until the student graduated the school, authorities said.
Rankin worked as an assistant track coach and assistant bowling coach at the high school. He began working there in 2009.
The investigation began after school personnel learned of the alleged abuse and contacted authorities, the release said.
The Park Ridge Police Department and the Bergen County Prosecutor Office’s Special Victims Unit conducted the investigation.
Rankin was charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of endangering the welfare of a child, both second-degree crimes.
Bail was sent at $50,000 with no 10 percent option and no contact with the victim.
"We only learned of this matter today and we will evaluate the situation," said Mary Beth Zeman, director of public relations for the university.
