UPDATED: Wayne Valley Student Accused of Punching Cop
17-year-old charged with aggravated assault following Tuesday incident at school.
Editor's note: Superintendent of Schools Ray Gonzalez issued a statement Thursday morning regarding the incident reported in this article. The statement has been added to the article.
A 17-year-old Wayne Valley High School student was charged with assaulting a police officer after he allegedly punched Det. Michael Zaccone in the chest Tuesday afternoon, according to NorthJersey.com.
The student was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and released to his parents, the website reported.
Zaccone is the school resource officer (SRO) at Wayne Valley High School. Officer Mark Dubois is the school resource officer at Wayne Hills High School.
As SROs, Zaccone and Dubois work with and mentor students. They help students resolve conflicts and encourage them to be leaders in the community, the Wayne Police Department's website states. They educate students about crime prevention and how to resist using drugs and alcohol. They also work to ensure the safety of students, faculty, and staff at school functions and extracurricular activities.
This year marks the first time freshmen are exposed to SROs. Each middle school used to have an SRO, but due to budget constraints, they were eliminated from the middle schools three years ago.
“It’s a positive program. We are here to mentor kids about the dangers of drugs, alcohol, and everything they’ve been bombarded with since they were exposed to the D.A.R.E. program in fifth grade,” Zaccone told Patch last week. “We want to be looked at as an extension of the community. We’re here to ensure they enjoy the best four yeas of their lives.”
Superintendent of Schools Ray Gonzalez issued a statement Thursday morning regarding the incident.
"While we will not offer specific comment on matters related to students or staff, I can say unequivocally that safety is a top priority," Gonzalez said. "Wayne Township Public Schools implements and vigorously enforces all safety protocols, and our school resource officers work diligently to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and visitors."

Wow. So disturbing. Officer Zaccone is a great person. He was my SRO at Wayne valley and he really is a great man who helps a lot of people. It is disgusting that someone would do that to him.

Accusation is not the same as conviction, don't rush to judgment.

Hmm, excuse me Scondo, but by saying that there is an insinuation that Officer Zaccone is lying. Uh, doubt it!
What is wrong with the kids we hear about lately in the news? Is it the parents, the peers? When I read what some of them write on Twitter and FB is so disturbing. I suppose I shouldn't be so surprised.

There was no insinuation at all, I just said don't rush to judgment. And then you go painting all kids with the same broad brush because of what you hear in the news lately, and then you rely upon hearsay about what is tweeted or put on facebook. And then I wonder how is anyone to get a fair trial when so many prejudge. Make no mistake I am not saying the child is innocent, I am merely saying don't prejudge. Keeping that in check is difficult if you can't keep your own biases in check and you are demonstrably biased toward young people. Go outside and yell at them to keep off your grass.

Where do you see any statement attributed to Officer Zaccone ? If there is no statement from the officer how can you know what he did or did not say.

There is no respect for authority. The boys in the fall have not been in any trouble since the event and continue to show what it is to be good men and citizen . Hope all young men would follow their example.

Let's wait and see. If I'm not mistaken there are video cameras in the hallways.
There should be a recording of the incident.

Agreed! Ever since my child went to high school in the town, I became appalled at what goes on with the kids, and parents alike. It was like a wake call at the dysfunction in this town (I am sure other towns as well, don't get me wrong)

What has changed in our public schools since the 1970's that warrants the need for police to be there thru-out the entire school day ?
